A glimpse of  Jessie Glova Style Salon for Men and Women.

We recently caught up with one of Cebu's premiere makeup artists, Jessie Glova, via email to learn more about his biggest project thus yet, the Jessie Glova Style Salon for Men and Women, and share in the excitement of the news. Scroll down below to learn more about his thoughts on beauty, life, and work.

CebuMUAs.com: When did you begin working on this project?
JG: I have been planning this project since the middle of last year.
It’s always been my dream to own a salon. It gives me great
fulfillment especially because beauty is my passion.

CebuMUAs.com: What services will you be offering?
JG: We will be offering almost all salon services apart from a
full body spa- from manicures to pedicures, foot massages and spa,
eyelash extensions, threading, hair extension, hair color , hair rebonding,
cut, treatments, and facials. We are also considering cosmetic tattoo
or eyebrow embroidery in the near future.

CebuMUAs.com: Describe the chosen ambiance or interior design you have
chosen for your salon.
JG: Definitely shabby chic. I want it fresh, clean, and classy.

CebuMUAs.com: What products will you be offering?
JG: We will be offering Jessie Glova Cosmetics in the makeup studio and
L’Oreal and Matrix for hair services.

CebuMUAs: What has been your most memorable makeup session to date?
JG: I’ve had a lot of memorable makeup sessions, but the one that stands
out right now is a recent prenuptial photoshoot with a young where
I made them look like they were 70 years old in a span of 30 minutes.

CebuMUAs.com: Do you have any upcoming projects that you would like to
share besides the opening of your salon?
JG: As of now I’m concentrating on kick starting the operations for my
new salon and  make-up studio. Soon I’ll be re-launching my cosmetic line
which is currently under a repackaging process and BFAD approval. I also
keep myself busy with, Corona Sugbuanon Organization, a nonprofit
organization that helps aspiring beauty queens.

CebuMUAs.com: What do you wish to share with young stylists/makeup artists
who want to follow in your footsteps?
JG: Just believe in yourself, love your work and be passionate with what
you’re doing. Stay focused and most of all keep learning and studying.

CebuMUAs.com: What inspires you every day?
JG: I’ve always felt like if I don’t follow my dreams then I don’t know what will
happen to me.  Life is so short so I am just enjoying every bit of it. I would love
to share my success to all the people I love and those who love me.

CebuMUAs.com: What is your take on Cebu's beauty industry?
JG: The beauty industry in Cebu is really doing well. I believe that Cebu is embracing it.
People are more conscious about looking after their well-being. I believe that beauty and wellness are definitely important to this generation.

We're incredibly happy for Jessie and all the success he's been enjoying lately. Cebu is definitely lucky to have him. We wish him the best of luck and can't wait to visit him at Jessie Glova Style Salon for Men and Women. Will you be seeing him soon?

Top 7 Mistakes Your Makeup Artist Can Make

We love them for their creativity and vivacious personalities, but they’re not always perfect. After reading this, here's hoping they won’t ever make these mistakes on us again.

1. Applying the wrong shade of foundation.

“Did someone dump a bag of flour on my face?” I once asked myself as I flipped through some pictures from last week’s event. “How could I not have noticed?” I thought. I challenge you to check your photo album right now and count the number of pictures of yourself where your face appears visibly whiter than the rest of your body. Cringe-inducing, right? Don’t worry. It happens to even to the best of us. Most cosmetic brands originate from the west with the Caucasian target market in mind. Until recently, they didn’t offer a lot of choices for ethnic groups. We’ve had no choice but to embrace what they’ve had to offer in our department stores where we usually shop for makeup. These days many cosmetic companies have expanded their product lines to reach out to a more diverse target market both domestically and internationally. Plus, there are local brands available in the Philippines nowadays offering makeup shades that match Filipino skin tones.

One of the things that can help people to develop their skills as a makeup artist is knowledge about fashion, art, and design. There is information about art, design, and fashion courses and degrees at http://www.accreditedonlineschools.org.

Tips: Take a picture of yourself with the flash on to determine if your foundation matches your skin tone. If your face appears either lighter or darker compared to your neck and the rest of your body, try again. Can’t find your perfect shade? Try mixing two different shades of foundation to match your skin tone.

2. Using too much makeup.

Have you ever stared at yourself in the mirror and not recognize your face with all that makeup on? I live by the philosophy that when makeup is done right, you don’t need much. Makeup should serve to enhance your natural features while hiding imperfections here and there. If your makeup artist has managed to make you beautiful and still look like yourself at the same time, you’ve found a gem. Unless you are going to be on television or on stage where harsh lighting can wash out your makeup, you really don’t need much. But then again, every now and then it’s nice to try something different for character photoshoots.;)

Tip: Wipe it off and start over!

3. Applying the wrong shade of under eye concealer or not blending it well.
Hey, even JLo’s makeup artist made this mistake. The under eye concelear is meant to be a shade lighter than your skin tone. When it’s too light you get the opposite of a raccoon eye and it makes your face look segmented. Typically makeup artists tend to over apply concealer to hide tired eyes or dark eye bags. When not done correctly, however, it may only serve to highlight those problems even more.

Tip: Ask your makeup artist to blend it better or layer a darker shade over it.

4. Forcing a high-bridged nose.
The appreciation of a high-bridged nose is deeply rooted in our culture. Growing up we are constantly bombarded with images of beautiful women on the cover of magazines from the western culture. We are used to making fun of the 'Filipino nose'. If we genuinely love ourselves for who we are and stop trying to become someone we're not, then maybe our makeup artists can get over this mistake...forever! It’s normal and acceptable for makeup artists perform contour shading around the nose area for definition (even people with high-bridged noses get it done), but when they overdo it you could end up with dark lines on the sides of your nose making you look completely fake. Most of all, if you don't really need it, you're better off without it.

Tip: Blend downwards with a light foundation to make the lines appear more subtle.

5. Touching your face without first sanitizing their hands.
We all do our best to take good care of our skin. One simple way to do this is by keeping it clean from germs, bacteria and other microorganisms that may irritate the skin or cause acne. Therefore it’s only fair to expect makeup artists to sanitize their hands before touching your face. A while back I remember the strong smell of cigarettes on the hands of a makeup artist. Eeewww. I was completely turned off by the experience.
Tip: Keep a hand sanitizer handy and politely offer it to your makeup artist before a makeup session.

6. Dirty makeup brushes or beauty tools.
This has got to be one of my most annoying pet peeves when it comes to someone else doing my makeup. The thought of dirty makeup brushes or beauty tool used so many times on other people’s faces then being used on mine makes me very uncomfortable. When a makeup artist arrives with clean makeup tools, he/she gives me the impression of professionalism and I feel more confident with his/her work.

Tip: Bring out your own set of clean makeup brushes or other beauty tools in case your makeup artist arrives with a dirty set. Here's a tip on how to clean them.

7. Lip liner a little too far above your natural lip line.
Makeup artists may draw your lip liner differently to improve the shape of your lips or make them appear fuller. It can look funny and very unnatural if they exaggerate the line or use the wrong shade of lip liner.

Tip: Opt for a dab of gloss on the center of your lips instead for fuller, natural-looking lips.

Tell us: What mistake has your makeup artist made that you absolutely cannot forget? We’d love to hear it!

How to Choose a Makeup Artist for Your Wedding

Image via www.christanburran.com

Every bride deserves to look gorgeous on her wedding day. Hiring a makeup artist you can trust is just as important as finding that perfect wedding dress. In Cebu, it can be very confusing as there are several skilled and talented makeup artists to choose from. No two makeup artists are ever the same, so don’t forget to do your homework before making that crucial decision. Unless you’re confident enough to go the DIY route Ã  la Catherine Middleton, it is better to leave your wedding makeup in the hands of a professional. After all those photographs will last a lifetime.

1. Determine exactly how you want your wedding makeup to look.
Makeup artists may have a vision on how your makeup should look like on your wedding day. It’s ok to get their opinion, but first you need to determine exactly how you want your wedding makeup to look. You know your face best. Collect inspiration photos from magazines or the internet to bring to your makeup artist. If you have one, bring a wedding scrapbook with you to give the makeup artist and idea of your wedding dress and color scheme. If you don’t, simply describe.

2. Do your research.
Don’t ignore this one. Ask around for recommendations and testimonials. Go online and check out their portfolios. Most makeup artists these days have blogs or websites showcasing their work and experience. Find out the answers to these questions:
·     Does she/he arrive on time?
You want someone who is prompt and sticks to the schedule.
·     What makeup products do they use?
You may have your personal preferences.  If you don’t like the products they are using, ask if they are okay with using your makeup pile. If you are intent on using a fresh makeup set, find out if they can do the shopping for you. Most of them would be happy to do this.
·     How much do they charge?
Stick to your budget but don’t forget to tip generously. (They really appreciate that.) Some of them may have an assistant or two with them to help with your hair.
·     Is bridal makeup their specialty?
Every makeup artist has his/her own specialty. A good bridal makeup artist will enhance your beauty to make you look like the best version of yourself on your wedding day and not somebody else.
·     What is their availability?
Makeup artists usually prefer bridal makeup services to be booked months in advance. Call to check if they are available on your wedding day. Remember  to make an appointment for a bridal makeup test shoot prior to your wedding.

3. Build rapport.
You don’t only want to look good on your wedding day; you want to feel good as well. Choose a makeup artist who you share a good rapport with. As a bride you have to feel comfortable with whom you are hiring for one of the most important days of your life.

4. Never hesitate to communicate.
After you’ve chosen your makeup artist, keep communication lines open to avoid issues. Ask questions and voice out your concerns. This way, your makeup artist will be able to provide you with the best standards in customer service and professionalism.

May 2011 Brides

Congratulations to the May brides.

Bride: Sheryl Suzanne Chua; Groom: Cynric Ang
Wedding Gown: Philip Rodriguez
Hair and Makeup: Abbai Pila and Wenwen Zaspa

The smokey eyes with pale pink lips has always been one of my favorite makeup trends ever since I saw it on Miss Universe 2002 Oxana Fedorova and I'm glad to see that Wenwen Zaspa chose it for this bride because the colors complement her smooth, fair skin beautifully. It seems to be a favorite among Hollywood celebrities as well. Love, love, love! Great for brides who want to look elegant and refined on their wedding day just like Sheryl here.

Makeup Inspiration: Bronze Goddess

Model: Chloe Marie Harris
Makeup: WenWen Zaspa
Hair: Abbai Pila
Resort Dress: Harley Ruedas
Photography: James Go, Agness Garrido and Chubby

These stunning photos immediately reminded me of beautiful summers spent in Cebu. I wish a plane would whisk me away right now and take me down to one of our sunny beaches. Wondering what that table is doing in the collage? The intricate sleeve design on the model's Harley Ruedas resort dress looks like it's inspired by the Geo Cocktail Table created by Cebu's very own contemporary furniture designer Vito Selma. Meanwhile, the model's glowing complexion made me think of our sandy beaches like the one at the Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa. Below are some products to help you achieve this glamorous bronzed look. You'll be a goddess in no time.

(LEFT-RIGHT) Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil, $14; Honey Bronze Brilliance Powder, $22; Honey Bronze Bronzing Gel for the Face, $14; Honey Bronze Lip Nectar in Coral and Copper, $13; Honey Bronzing Powder, $18.50

The Body Shop has been working hard on their makeup line and they are joining the bandwagon of bronzing experts. I am very impressed by their ultra modern packaging. The warm tones make me want to go and grab the products. (But mostly because it has my nickname on it...hehe.) This whole collection right here is for the face and body and is enriched with Community Fair Trade honey (how thoughtful). It's supposed to give the skin a smooth, even bronzed result. Hey, the prices aren't bad too! Check them out now at SM and Ayala.

Revlon Lustrous Lipstick in Chocolate Velvet, $5.04

This irresistible shade from Revlon goes perfectly with bronzed skin. Try it if you want to emphasize your lips even more.
